Power cut safety

  • Fallen or sparking wires

Keep well back from fallen wires and anything touching them – water, tin roofs, fences, rickshaws. Treat every wire as live. Call 999 or your utility hotline (16999 for any utility).

  • Floods and waterlogging

Do not walk through water near poles, transformers or meter boards. Switch off the main switch before water reaches sockets, and get an electrician to check wiring before switching back on.

  • Storms and cyclones

In a kalbaishakhi or cyclone stay indoors and away from poles and trees. When a danger signal is raised, utilities may switch coastal areas off. Call 1090 for disaster warnings.

  • Generators outside only

Run petrol, diesel or gas generators in the open, away from doors and windows – exhaust fumes can kill. Use a changeover switch; never back-feed into house wiring – it can kill line workers.

  • IPS and batteries

Keep IPS batteries in a ventilated place away from children, top up distilled water in tubular batteries and do not overload the IPS with irons, heaters or AC.

  • Food safety

Keep the fridge closed: food stays cold for about 4 hours, a full freezer about 48 hours. In the heat, cooked rice, fish, meat and milk spoil quickly – when in doubt, throw it out.

  • Candles and kerosene lamps

Use a rechargeable light or torch where you can. Keep candles and hurricane lamps on a stable surface, away from curtains and mosquito nets, and never leave them burning while asleep.

  • Switch off heavy appliances

Switch off AC, water pump, iron and geyser when the power goes. When it returns, wait a minute and switch them back on one by one to protect them from voltage swings.

  • Heat

During long summer load shedding drink water, keep the elderly, children and sick cool, and call 999 or the health line 16263 if someone shows signs of heatstroke.
